Finding Your Destination

You don’t have to limit your college search to a few schools that you’ve heard about on social media or that friends and relatives may have attended. There are thousands of excellent colleges out there, and you probably aren’t familiar with most of them. Barrister will work with you to identify your needs and preferences in several different areas (cost, location, size. intended major, amenities, housing, “vibe,” etc.) and prepare a customized report suggesting schools that fit your profile and the strengths and weaknesses of each for your particular situation.

Do I start by looking at college rankings?

Not recommended. Actually, your best bet is to start with a budget — the amount that your family can afford to contribute each year from income, savings, and assets. This helps you understand how much aid you may need.

Do I have to take the SAT or ACT?

Usually not, but it’s worth a try. Most colleges will consider SAT/ACT scores if they are provided, and submitting a score above the college’s typical score range (or well above the norm for your high school) can be helpful in gaining admission.

If I’m already a senior, is it too late?

Nope! While most applications to competitive colleges are submitted in the fall of senior year, many colleges —including some pretty well-known ones — still accept applications as late as the summer prior to fall enrollment.

How will I ever narrow down all the choices?

That’s what Barrister is for! Contact us by email at barristeradvising@gmail.com to set up a free consultation. We will help you create a list of great colleges at different levels of cost and selectivity.

Now is the time to get started.

It’s never too soon to start thinking and planning. Courses chosen (or not chosen) in high school can have an impact on a student’s readiness for certain colleges and programs down the road.
